Nature walks with donkeys in Aljezur (or Burros & Artes in Aljezur) project, offers you wonderful trekking possibilities, environmental information and local interaction, all in the company of Sofia and her donkeys.
Sofia is a donkey lover and she decided to turn this passion into a way of life. To those who visit her, Sofia proposes and offers trekking activities in the company of these lovely animals, at their own pace, as well as help in carrying all sorts of equipment such as picnic baskets, blankets, jackets, etc. Children are the privileged customers here, given the fact that they can ride their favourite donkey, after a lot of petting, carrot distribution and other types of pampering which both children and donkeys adore. And, if the little ones allow you to, adults may also try donkey riding.
Donkeys are loving, sweet, patient, hearty, cooperative and easygoing animals, just to name a few of their attributes. The relationship one builds with these animals throughout a trekking experience such as this one is unforgettable, not only for the children but also for the adults, because the fascination man has had with the donkey is as old as time itself. Their pace is ideal for this kind of nature walks and to enjoy the scenery and everything else this part of the country has to offer.
Sítio dos Burros at Vale das Amoreiras, is the ideal place for this sort of trekking. The paths take you along green hills and valleys, mountain ridges with breathtaking views spreading from the ocean to the Monchique mountains, Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina Natural Park, Aljezur municipality and S. Vicente Cape. Vale de Amoreiras farm is surrounded by about 50 hectares of pure nature, at one end of Monchique mountains, in the midst of a Natural Park. It is located about 3kms from the town of Aljezur and 10kms from its magnificent shore. It is an old and very well preserved farm, where one will enjoy not only the amenities of a 100 year old house, but also the nature walks along the paths that crisscross the farm. Here, one can choose between a 90 minute or a 6 hour trekking.
For a trekking experience outside the farm, you can opt for a one day trekking and explore Aljezur’s streets and its castle, built by the Moors in the tenth century, or head to Rogil’s coast, where the views from the cliffs over beaches decorated with incredible rocky outcrops will leave you speechless.
Sofia also organizes 2 to 7 day trekking adventures, from Aljezur to several interesting sites in the area, such as S. Vicente Cape, Odeceixe, Monchique, Monte Clérigo and Arrifana, for a true communion with nature, the sea, the very own and particular sunlight of this area, the aromas and…the moon.
